International Driving Permits & License Translations

If you have a foreign driving license, you will need an additional document: either an International Driving Permit (IDP) or a License Translation. This will be separate from your original driving license.

The specific document required depends on the country where your original license was issued. These documents are generally easy and affordable to obtain.

International Driving Permit

For Counties listed in the Convention of Geneva 1949, an International Driving Permit is required and can be obtained in the same country your license was issued prior to your arrival in Japan.

Licence Translation

For Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, France, Monaco and Taiwan, an official Japanese translation of your driving license is required to ride a scooter in Japan. Once in Japan, your translation can be applied for online and collected via a printing service at convenience stores.
